When Mai first starts out in the show she seems quite superficial and arrogant. She challenges Dinosaur Ryuzaki to a duel for his room and easily beats him. When most guys see her for the first time all they notice is her pretty face and revealing outfits. She's much more than that. Her parents died when she was younger and she's been alone most of her life. When she loses to Yami no Malik her fate is to die alone. Luckily she is saved from that.


The first ones she meets out of the gang are Yuugi and Jounuchi. Yuugi she seems to respect but not Jounuchi. She even challenges Jounuchi to a duel thinking she would win easily. But once Jounuchi figures out her secret (which wasn't any psychic powers) he managed to defeat her. She then got Dinosaur Ryuzaki to duel Jounuchi. If he won she would duel Ryuzaki again. He loses and Mai leaves.


Mai decides to camp out with Yuugi and the rest if they cook. It was then she realized that maybe they aren't so bad after all. She spends time with Anzu making sure the boys don't catch a peak of her. Her and Anzu get to talk and Anzu got to learn a little of Mai's past. Later that night Mai is forced to fight Panik and loses all of her starchips. Yuugi and the rest find her and Yuugi duels Panic. Yuugi wins all of her starchips back she tells him she owes him one. Next time Mai is seen is because Yuugi loses his starchips to Kaiba. Mai offers him hers but he won't respond. She's challenged by Anzu for them. Anzu had a lot of heart in it but she was going to lose. But instead of Mai using her Harpies Feather Duster to destroy what Anzu had done, she surrenders and lets Anzu win. It was what helped Yuugi regain his confidence.


Mai ends up having to duel Yuugi. Yuugi wasn't dueling his best until Mai encourages him and he starts paying attention to the duel. Mai is the one to give Jounuchi her entry card (after losing to Yuugi) so he could duel Bandit Keith. It was stolen earlier by Bandit Keith. Mai isn't in the forefront for awhile until Yuugi, Jounuchi and Mokuba are all on a mission to rescue Kaiba. She and the rest with the exception of Yuugi and Seto end up losing in this virtual world.


Next time Mai is seen she meets up with Jounuchi's sister Shizuka. She takes her over to see her brother duel. None of Mai's duels are shown until it gets down to the final 8. The final 8 are Mai, Bakura, Malik, Isis, Kaiba,Yuugi, Jounuchi, and Rishid. Unfortunately Mai's first duel was after Malik changed and was Yami no Malik. It was also right after Jounuchi had told her she wasn't in the dream so she was feeling alone like Rishid. She lost badly to Yami no Malik because of the God card. She had minor possession of it but found out it was a trap. Yami no Malik knew she wouldn't be able to read the inscription. During the duel Yami no Malik would erase the memory of someone she knew with each attack. The first person who was erased was Anzu. Yami no Malik sentences her to lose all memory of her friends and if she wasn't saved in time she would die alone.


Yuugi (of course) ends up being the one to defeat Yami no Malik. Shizuka and Mai play a little trick on Jounuchi. Mai pretended to still be asleep and when she opened her eyes she was laughing at him.


Mai then leaves and isn't seen again into the filler series known as Doma. In it she's one of the bad guys. Psychologically she's messed up because of what heppened to her with Yami no Malik. She manages to duel Jounuchi for his soul. When Jounuchi is close to passing out her anger directed at him fades away. When he finally does lose his soul she decides to fight and get it back. She is later defeated by Raphael. Yuugi (once again) is the one to defeat the main villain and rescue Mai. After Doma and Mai leaving she is never seen again unfortunately.
